On 19th August 2024, the Himalayan Economic Upliftment(HEU) project launched English literacy classes in Timang village of Manang. These classes are being conducted as a precursor to the HEU project for a more effective HEU project implementation in the coming year. A total of 16 women beneficiaries currently attend these classes which aims to improve the English language proficiency of the local women.
The hourly classes are conducted five days a week led by the local school teacher. Most of the beneficiaries are hotel owners who expressed a keen interest in improving their English skills to better communicate with their guests. Recognising the importance of learning language skills in delivering good customer service, these women are committed to improving and applying this new skill in their business. The classes began with foundational lessons in English alphabets and prepositions. Currently, the participants are focusing on practical language skills such as taking orders and serving food to their foreign guests. This ensures women not only learn the language but also apply it in their daily interactions with tourists. The HEU Project aims to provide youth and women beneficiaries of the project with relevant skills (vocational/technical) to enable increase in employment, decent jobs and entrepreneurial ventures, Amics will continue the classes to empower women through language skills. Moreover, Amics plans to launch various projects in the upcoming months focusing on enhancing the economy and livelihood of the beneficiaries.
This project is possible thanks to the support of all the members of Amics del Nepal and the collaborating partners:
