Social Hours (SH) Youth Program

Social Hour Field Visit to Nepal International Film Festival (NIFF)

A group of 14 youths, accompanied by two staff members and two volunteers, embarked on an enriching field visit to Nepal International Film festival (NIFF) in Civil Mall, Sundhara to witness the compelling short movies on 17th March, 2024. The group attended NIFF to witness several impactful short films, including “Chhaupadi,” “Sun Ra Pani,” “I Promise You Paradise,” and “Unspoken Bond.” These films were a mix of national and international productions, each carrying significant messages and themes that resonated with the educational content covered in the participants’ recent quarter.

“Chhaupadi ” highlighted the harmful menstrual practice prevalent in far western Nepal emphasising the riots and beliefs that perpetuate such practice and need for societal change and gender equality. “Sun Ra Pani” addressed how a woman must give all of her to the man she loves just because that is her gender role. “I Promise You Paradise” which was an international short explored a subtle and meditative observation of guilt, love, redemption and life. And “Unspoken Bond” delved into human relationships, showcasing a story of an 84 year old single mother nourishing her disabled daughters. The overarching objective shared by these movies is to provoke critical thinking and catalyse societal change by shedding light on pressing issues, fostering empathy, and encouraging viewers to challenge existing norms and perceptions.

The selection of these films was intentional, as each movie aligned with the thematic content covered in the youths recent quarter. The narratives and messages conveyed in these films provided real-world examples and perspectives that enriched their understanding of the subjects studied. The field visit to NIFF was a resounding success, fulfilling its objectives of exposing the participants to impactful cinema aligned with their learning objectives. Such experiences contribute significantly to the holistic development and academic enrichment of  youths giving the texts they read a more practical approach.
