On 18th May 2019, the AdN Kathmandu team visited Bhimphedi Children’s Home along with one youth volunteer to organize the 5th edition of the much anticipated event called Bal Man Market. The main goal of this event is for the children to understand the value of things and that most of the times we need to work really hard to get what we would like to have. For this reason, during the four months prior to the event, the children help around the children’s home to receive points. These points then get exchanged into “Bal Man Rupees” which are then used to shop for goods in the market. With the objective of the game in mind, the children get involved in various chores such as cooking, general cleaning of the center, and taking care of the kitchen garden in order to earn as many points as possible. They even organise different art and craft activities by themselves to produce goods which can be sold back to the market organiser.
The event takes place every four months and children find clothes, games and toys, sports equipment, grooming products and sometimes even some electronics in the market. The event functions like a real market and it helps the children understand the concept of money. So far, it has been an effective way to keep the children active and to help them learn some basic and important aspects of life.
